Moving forward towards a circular economy is the future. Customers are more than ever aware of what they purchase, legislation is continually updated and you, as a responsible organisation, want to be on the forefront of this evolution. True sustainability is more than a buzzword, it comes from innovative players who combine vision with action.
Packaging is one of the issues still subject to debate. As a passionate producer, you want the best solution to deliver your products in their top-quality. Yet, disposables have a difficult perception in a world that is more and more demanding when it comes to circularity. Luckily there is considerable innovation in the research for sustainable packaging, and you can bring this expertise into your process.
The challenge is: knowing which solutions are actually worth it. Which innovations in packaging are actually future-proofed and which are fancy but not so functional. We help you navigate the world of sustainable packaging. We support you in the development of the best solutions for your products. We guide you to transition your process and implement best-practices. We advise you on the latest innovations and legislation.
True sustainability comes from organisations who dare to take action and make this circular economy a reality. Welcome to Reco2Bio. We are your guide in this journey towards sustainable packaging.
Dirk Wens
With over 35 years of experience, Reco2Bio is your consultant in the transition to sustainable packaging of your products. Whether you are a smaller organisation or a large industrial player, we offer tailor-made project guidance from A to Z.
You don't have to figure it all out yourself, we've got the expertise, the network and years of practical experience. Here's an overview of what we can help you with, but feel free to reach out.
Each project starts with the identification of your needs and quest for sustainability. We start from your current product and envision what qualities your new packaging should have. Sometimes the goal is a redesign so it can be more easily recycled, in other cases the aim is a complete shift to biomaterials that can be composted in facilities or at home.
Recyclable, compostable, CO₂ neutral, biodegradable, ... There are many possibilities in terms of materials and we help you explore what options suit your needs.
Based on the needs of you product, process and brand identity we develop a suitable composition of your packaging. We explore which materials can, or should, be combined for the desired results. Think about layering for leak-free food packaging, ensuring long shelf-life or appealing feel for your customer. There are so many options, from conventional but recyclable packaging, to glass and a broad range of biomaterials such as fibers (from e.g. sugarcane or bamboo) and flexible or rigid bioplastics (cellophane, PLA, Thermoplastic Starch, PHB(V)).
Designing a suitable packaging is not a one-solution fits all but a tailored process of fine-tuning and innovation. We ensure access to the latest materials, technologies and cutting-edge sustainable packaging options and provide well-considered technical testing. Together, we combine our technical expertise and commitment to innovation with your products practical needs.
We have an extensive network of material producers and production facilities. We can guide you towards trusted providers of raw materials for your newly designed packaging and explore the most suitable production sites. Again, sustainability is not a standard solution. Sometimes the best solution may be very local, and sometimes it may turn out to be much more sustainable to collaborate with global partners. We help you explore the options and make informed, calculated decisions.
Navigating the world of sustainable packaging is an innovative venture. Not only do you want the best packaging solution, you want to make sure it complies with the latest quality standards and legislative requirements. We've got your back. We can guide you through the process of certification - ensuring your packaging is truly recognized as biodegradable or recyclable. Moreover, Reco2Bio is stakeholder in various knowledge groups and legislative institutes, meaning we are on the forefront to guide you in the current and upcoming legislative requirements.
Throughout or project together, we consider the entire life-cycle of your new packaging, from design to disposal. Our goal is not just a new packaging, but a comprehensive environmental impact reduction. This way, you know you made the right choices to move your company forward as a truly innovative circular player and are proud to communicate transparently about your product.

Lima is a Belgian-based company offering high-quality, nutritious, organic food for conscious consumers. With more than 65 years of experience, they pioneered a return to organic agriculture and even lay the foundations for the European legislation. Reco2Bio is proud to have partnered with them in the development of a new, home compostable packaging for dry goods.
With more than 125 years experience, Rombouts is a well-established coffee roaster with a worldwide consumer base. This family coffee business was the inventor of the original coffee filter: a revolutionary method for consumers to drink a perfectly measures cup of coffee at home. Yet, the original design was made of polypropylene. With the impact of plastic pollution in mind, Rombouts decided to innovate and shift to a home compostable alternative. Reco2Bio guided them in the design and transition to this new packaging solution.
One of the current challenges in bio-waste is the processing of fruit labels. These little (and bigger) labels often end up in the compost, together with the peels of the fruit, yet they are not compostable. In March 2024 the Government of Flanders (Belgium) has passed legislation (Vlarema9) banning fruit and vegetable labels unless the label is functional, has legally required information or is certified as (HOME)compostable. Also at the European level, the revised P&PWR requires now the same.
Since 2018 we and our partners have been working on industrially compostable fruit labels (EN13432) and we now have developed a HOME compostable version. Our fruit label is suitable for hand-labeling applications as well as high-speed, automated labeling, and allows thermo-printing. It is plastic-free, obtained independent certification for home composting standards and meets French home composting standard NF T 51-800.
We're looking forward to share this innovation with you! Contact us for information.
